Let me begin by saying I am not a health expert. I won't quote statistics to impress you or even try to expand on the health effects of juicing. I'm here to tell you about the benefits of juicing that I've experienced. So, if your interested in hearing a normal chick's juicing story, stick around! I'll share my favorite recipes, my recommendation for the best juicer for beginners, and why I love juicing.

Where did you even hear about juicing?
Living in Southern California, I'm exposed to TONS of fads and trends. LA-LA-Land is, after all, the home of swimming pools and movie stars. Becoming obsessed with your appearance in LA is easy. So, it's no surprise that juicing for weight loss sounded attractive to me.
Friends at work kept talking about the health effects of juicing, so naturally, I started listening. Weight loss. Clearer skin. Energy. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Isn't Buying Fresh Juice Expensive?
What I soon learned is that juicing is expensive! Almost all of them were getting fresh cold-pressed juice from Erewhon, one of the best health food stores ever. But, at $10-15 a bottle, I just couldn't afford fresh juice.
I started shopping around, finding more affordable (and closer) juice options like Howling Juice in Culver City and Salud in Long Beach. But the cost of juicing kept adding up! The Professor was starting to notice the expense, which is when I knew something had to change.
How Much Does a Juicer Cost?
One of my friends at work kept telling me to buy a juicer, but the juicer she recommended was quite costly (read: several hundred dollars). After spending so much at local juice shops, I wasn't ready to fork over big bucks just to have fresh juice at home.
Rather than spend tons of time researching the best juicer for beginners, I decided just to buy a cheap juicer. Target, here I come!
After a quick comparison of the available juicers at Target, I confidently chose an affordable model with the most voltage available (knowing I'd want to juice whole fruit). $99 later, I was the proud owner of a cheap juicer. And, man, let me tell you, that's the best money I've ever spent.
My Oster JusSimple juicer isn't fancy. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of expensive juicers. But that hasn't stopped me from making some AH-MAZING juices.
What do I love best about my cheap juicer?
- It's easy to assemble & disassemble
- It's easy to clean & dishwasher safe
- It's able to masticate whole fruit with rinds/peels
- It's relatively quiet
- And, best of all, it's cheap!
What are the Benefits of Juicing?
My juicing journey has been short but satisfying. Since I started juicing regularly I've noticed a huge difference in the way I feel (and look). I'm also starting to experience some of the other benefits of juicing that I've heard so much about, including regular bowels, improved digestion, increased energy, improved immunities, weight loss, and better complexion.
Isn't Juicing at Home Expensive, too?
Yes, using a whole fruit juicer like my Oster JusSimple is more expensive than simply buying store-bought juice. First of all, the amount of fruit needed to make a sufficient amount of juice to satisfy you is significant (see recipes below). There's a ton of waste material as a result of whole fruit juicing (which makes for good plant food btw). And fresh juice doesn't keep long, but that's because there are no additives or preservatives!
What are some tips to save money on juicing at home?
For now, I don't feel bad about the extra expense of juicing, probably because I bought such a cheap juicer. Plus, most local grocers offer great deals on seasonal organic fruits, so I don't have to break the bank every time I want to juice. My advice to those who want to know how to start juicing is to buy a cheap juicer and stick with seasonal fruits and veggies. You're most likely to get good deals on seasonal items.
Pro Tip: Because juice absorbs so quickly into the bloodstream, it's best to use organic fruits & veggies that are free of toxins. If you can't find organic, be sure to peel rinds or peelings before juicing.
Well, what are you waiting for?
I could go on and on about the benefits of juicing that I've experienced, but I'd rather you just drink some juice. Shop around if you'd like, or simply trust that a cheap juicer is the best juicer for beginners. Either way, cheers to your health! Here are a few of my favorite juice recipes to get you started!
