There's nothing more fun than a good old-fashioned date night unless it's a retro date night! The Professor and I try to have a date night as often as possible, and often we opt for a retro date night. I'm working on a post of our favorite spots for retro date night in LA. But, in the meantime, check out my ideas below for a fun date night with your guy or gal that's sure to put a smile on your faces.

Go for a loop around the roller rink
Lace up your skates and hit the floor just in time for a "couples skate." Putting on a pair of roller skates is like an instant time warp, and what better way to reconnect with your love than holding hands around the roller rink while trying not to bust your butt. Seeing the "no chewing gum" signs and the disco ball is like stepping back in time. Roll your way into an 80's retro date night at your local roller rink.
Sip some bubbly at a soda shop
Before there were beatniks, there were bobby socks, jocks, and soda shops. While there aren't many soda shops left, you still may be able to find specialty stores that carry old-school soft drinks like the ones you used to drink when you were a kid. So sip a cherry soda and share a story about yourself with your boo!
Watch an old film in your local theater
The Professor and I love old movies. Our DVR is full of classic films featuring my favorite actors and actresses. To say that we are TCM fans is the ultimate understatement. So when I get the chance to see some of my favorite films on the big screen, I jump at the chance. TCM and Fathom have teamed up to bring classic movies to cities around the US. Watching Fred & Ginger, Myrna and William, or Bogie and Bacall is the ultimate retro date night in my book!
Get a sugar rush at a candy store
There's only one thing sweeter than a kiss from your honey: a sugary something from your local candy shop. Retro date night is all about feeling young and fun, and candy is the best way to connect with the kid inside. Reminisce about your favorite candies and share fun stories about your childhood that even your honey doesn't know. Load up on sweets to bring home for your next Netflix sesh.
Cozy up at a drive-in movie
Drive-in movies are hard to come by now, but, back in the day, they were all the rage. Any girl my age can tell you how she longed for a date night with Danny Zuko at the drive-in. Many drive-ins shuttered long ago, but there are a few still in operation around the country. Check out DriveInMovie.com for a comprehensive list of theaters to find one in your area.
Grab a burger at the local burger stand
American's love burgers, it's true. And many American love stories begin over burgers at the local burger joints. So why not reconnect with your love over an all-American patty with a side of fries? With national chains popping up on every corner, the mom-and-pop burger spots are harder and harder to find. So support your local burger spot for retro date night!
Share a scoop at an ice cream parlor
Everybody loves ice cream, so why not savor a flavor at your traditional ice cream parlor. Throwback far on this retro date night to 19th century America, when ice cream was the main attraction at local shops known as parlor rooms. Refrigerated trucks later killed the craze, but a few traditional ice cream shops still exist. While your town may not have an old-school shop, chances are you can find a nice cozy spot to share a scoop or two.
Sip a cocktail at a speakeasy
In these days craft beer is king, but back in the day, the cocktail reigned supreme. And in the age of Prohibition, the only place to get your fix was the local speakeasy. Secret doorways, passwords, and strong spirits can do a lot to spice up the night. After all, retro date night deserves its kicks, too!
Play Love Games at the Arcade
The 1980s delivered some tragic fashions and conservative politics, but the age of the arcade games brought us some real treasures, too! Pinball games morphed into Pong, and Mario Bros was born. But you don't have to beg mom for change anymore when you go. Arcades have grown up, and now arcade bars are popping up all over the US. What a better way to blow off some steam than partnering with your love for a two-player game of chance. Duck Hunt anyone?
Take to the lanes at the local bowling alley
Bringing your sweetheart to the bowling alley can only mean one thing: you like to roll. Take it from The Dude; sometimes you just need to knock down a few pins and have a little fun. Although bowling didn't originate in America, you can't get more American than this favorite mid-century pastime. So bring your lad or lass, along with your socks, to the local lanes for a rocking retro date night.
Well, there you have it! I hope I've inspired you to schedule that much needed retro date night with your honey. If so, check out my suggestions for casual but chic date night style below.
